Films of interest (2): the SAWNET list
Following up curiousity about Khamosh Pani (noted in blog below) and that film's writer, Paromita Vohra [on left], a quick google [used as verb] brought me to the SAWNET [South Asian Women's Network] filmmakers list. Which seems a compendium of notables.

In this movie by Reena Mohan, Paromita Vohra (also the scriptwriter) is one of the women who talk about their bodies.
If I remember correctly, there were six women in the documentary who talked about society's conceptions of the female body and their own ways of dealing with these conceptions. Vohra talked about being a 'fat' woman, talked about how her self-worth is reduced to nothing when she gets called a "moti" (derogatory word for "fat woman") in the streets.
She said, at one time in her life, she had wanted to act; but also knew that in the world of existing Indian cinema, she'd only be depicted as a comic aside, a physical failure. She came across as angry and spunky and she also had a delightful sense of humour.
You've made me want to watch "Khamosh Pani". I'll see if I can get hold of it.
hmm cool -- thanks Riv for that anecdotal backgrounder. If you do track down that film, I'd be glad to hear your report.
btw, you'll note my 2nd riverine ghazalish attempt [yonder beyond the commentariat cul-de-sac]:
