    he said   speaking at some imagined table
where was this conversation?   in the air?
    or in a film   they played late night on cable?
"I'm listening" she answered   & the care
    with which she spoke   encouraged him to babble
    the brook when running   polishes a pebble
it surely has   a thing or two to share
