Why rhyme? [mini-techno-ars poetica]

The stateliness of unrhymed verse is adequate                                
so why does the wish for rhyming still persist?                                

perhaps it involves a kind of verbal etiquette                                
each line desires to journey toward its tryst                                

a place where in the end its lips are kissed                                
in ways that might prove wonderfully delicate
