"Somebody's life" [rubai]
I was passing through somebody's life it seemed not my own
I was suffering somebody's strife it seemed not my own
the body was mine all the bills were addressed to me
I cut corners with somebody's knife it seemed not my own

David, Loved this. Particularly "the body was mine the bills were addressed to me".

Very wistful and frightening--all at the same time.
And it 'moves' very well too.
B & R, grazie --
it's a paradox, that the more time passes, the poorer seems my grip on life (in practical & tangible senses) -- with perhaps the exception of poetry. Rather as if poetry were the bloom flourishing at expense of the leaves; or perhaps a compensatory realm where order and meaning can enjoy an abstract existence. At any rate, this poem is one (and the recent The Loan is similar in this regard) that draws on the energy or sense of this sort of puzzle.
cheers,
