"Abstractions"       [villanelle]

After the party I dream this: someone is asking me for a drink -- I lift a bottle of tonic water and say, I'm sorry, but I have only abstractions.
      Ana Bozicevic-Bowling, "no real drinks"

I'm sorry but I have only abstractions
the tonic is more musical than physical
next door they offer chemical reactions

the realm of thought has many satisfactions
and yet it always leaves me feeling quizzical
I'm sorry but I have only abstractions

the sparkle of the bottle has attractions
the spindle of the body is libidinal
next door they offer chemical reactions

the chessboard's field is limited in actions
the play of war is patently political
I'm sorry but I have only abstractions

the summary required plot-compactions
the comment on the text was not rabbinical
next door they offer chemical reactions

the poem was a congeries of distractions
the compilation couldn't find a pinnacle
I'm sorry but I have only abstractions
next door they offer chemical reactions
