"Her name begins with S or R or something"
that's more or less the line I sadly fed him
I knew at once it truly was a dumb thing
it surely looked as if I had misled him

but no   he laughed!   his laughter was delicious!
"Look here" he said   "at times I've done duplicity
but as you know   it's never been propitious"
"I realize that" I said   what was the bliss of me?

were I in love with both of them?   or what?
I hadn't thought this through   before I met him
if this had been a joke   I'd be the butt
perhaps I was!   but look   I'd not upset him

"It seems to me like olden days"   he smiled
this ancient guy   looked younger than a child
